DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME begins Sunday, March 11. Remember to spring forward one hour!

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
As we are learning in our Lenten series about God's gift of forgiveness, I would like to remind you that I am always available for Individual Confession and Absolution. Whether troubled by "big" or "little" sins, all of us benefit from confessing our sins out loud and then in turn hearing God's forgiveness pronounced for those sins. Individual confession is done in complete confidentiality; as an ordain pastor I am bound never to speak of any sins confessed. The sins are confessed to God. I hear the confession not in order to judge, but to forgive. This gift of Individual Confession and Absolution is a powerful defense against the attacks of the devil, who is always seeking to turn our faith away from Christ. You are always welcome to contact me and set up a time with me for confession. In Christ, Pastor Hansen

LENTEN DEVOTIONS There are two Lenten daily devotions available on the table in the Narthex. One corresponds with out Lenten series "God's Gift of Forgiveness," and the other is from Lutheran Hour Ministries and is entitled "Jesus Christ: Man on a Mission." More copies of the Lutheran Hour devotions can be made.

FLOWERS FOR EASTER On Easter Sunday we will again be using Easter lilies, potted tulips or any spring flower to adorn our altar. The flower committee will be happy to purchase the flowers, or you may contact Gloria Krob or Vickie Ozburn if you wish to bring in your own flowers. Please have them at the church no earlier than Saturday, April 7. There are envelopes for monetary donations on the table in the Narthex. Donations can be placed in the offering plate or given to Gloria or Vickie. Please make checks out to the church with "Easter Flowers" in the memo line. Please have your monetary donations in by Sunday, April 1.

LWR KITS During March the Priscilla Guild is collecting items for fabric kits for Lutheran World Relief. Items needed for one kit are as follows:

Consider discussing, "What did Jesus do to calm the storm? How does Jesus calm the storms in our life?

The cost for this even is $10, and we'll spend 24 hours learning what campus ministry is like, spend time with the college students, tour Iowa City, play some awesome games and eat delicious food. You'll spend the night in a dorm room with a member of the Chapel Student Leadership Team, and on Sunday morning, we'll worship with them so you know what it's like to be a part of that during college. This is a great, cheap event that will give you a great idea of what is to come after high school. Let me know ASAP if you want to attend!

BUTTER BRAIDS The students attending Higher Things this summer will begin selling Butter Braids Sunday, Feb. 12. Each braid is $12 and is a delicious, easy breakfast when you have family visiting, or when you just want to treat yourself! This fundraiser is being sponsored by Thrivent with matching dollars given if we reach $750 in sales. Any help you can give would be appreciated, plus, who doesn't love this buttery treat!

There are Valentine's Day cards for sale in the Dayspring card display. They cost only $1, and it is an easy way to support your youth.

Noteworthy News 1/29/12

NEWSLETTER The February newsletter and calendar are available to view on the church website.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS The Sunday School lesson for this week focuses on the story of "Jesus and the Little children." In our sin, we are like small children: helpless, dependent, and needy. So Jesus came to bestow His love and eternal gifts upon us. Parents could discuss, "How did Jesus show His compassion on these little children? How does Jesus shower His compassion on us?"

On Sunday, February 12 the Sunday School youth will be singing at Hallmark Care Center during the Sunday School hour and also during the 9am worship service. We'll start Sunday School at 8am and leave for the care center at 8:15. Contact Sonya Sullivan for more information.

Mission Update: The Sunday School youth have surpassed their goal of $150. Great job Sunday School youth!! We are going to continue to collect mission contributions through May. We will continue to update the wall. We are also asking for matching funds from congregation members. Matching contributions may be given to Sonya Sullivan or placed in the offering plate designated "Sunday School Mission Matching." We appreciate your support!

MEN'S BREAKFAST will be Saturday, February 4 at 8am at the church. Contact Jeff Adrian for more information.

CONGREGATION INITIATIVE IDEAS FOR 2012 As we start another year in service to God and neighbor, now is a good time to consider how best to carry out the work of the kingdom in this community where God has placed us. An email was sent out to members earlier this week with an attachment stating a few suggestions for directing the focus of our congregation that current and incoming members of the council have discussed. Please feel free to critique them and offer other suggestions. The more input and ideas that we can gather, the better we will be able to plan our efforts in the coming year. Please put your thoughts in writing, and turn them in to the church office or Willis Wulf's church mailbox. Or you may email them to the secretary (secretarhy@splcmv.org), Pastor (pastor@splcmv.org) or Willis (Willis.wulf@thrivent.com). Please turn in your thoughts by Wednesday, January 18 so that we can compile them for the voters' assembly on January 22. Thank you.
